Why are the Kubalwela monastery grounds referred to as "Bodhi Parvathaya"?
The monastery is formally referred to as "Bodhi Parvathaya", which translates directly from Pali and Sinhala as the "Mountain of Enlightenment".
This name was chosen to mirror the temple’s steep, elevated geography and also its main working purpose, as a secluded place of refuge for deep Vipassana (insight) meditation. The title works like a metaphor too, pointing to a difficult yet fulfilling uphill spiritual ascent, needed in order to reach Buddhist enlightenment.
