If you head south from Ella, it is best to stop at Udawalawe National Park, which serves as a solid year-round destination for seeing wild elephants before moving toward the ocean. When you travel between November and April, moving toward the southern coast—such as Mirissa or Tangalle—brings optimal sunshine and excellent whale watching. On the other hand, if your dates fall between May and September while the southern monsoon is active, turning east toward Arugam Bay is the better plan.
