Where to go after Ella, Sri Lanka?
After checking out the mountainous, cool-climate tea country around Ella, most travellers end up going either straight south to the coastal beaches or then south-east for wildlife-related things, I mean safaris and that.
- Wildlife: you can travel south-east towards Yala National Park or Udawalawe National Park, and then do a jeep safari that is mostly focused on leopards and wild elephants.
- South Coast Beaches: head south to well-known coastal places like Mirissa, Hiriketiya, or Tangalle, where you can do surfing, relax in palm-fringed bays, and also try whale watching.
- East Coast Surfing: during the summer months (May–September), it is best to take a taxi or bus, then go north-east towards Arugam Bay; that way you hit the island’s best surf breaks.
