Where is Sri Lanka located on the world map?

On the world map, Sri Lanka kind of sits in the Northern Hemisphere, within South Asia, and, well, it is also a sovereign island nation. The thing is, it sits in the Indian Ocean, right there just south-east of the southern tip of India.

If you look at the exact geographic coordinates, it is roughly placed between 5° and 10° North latitude and 79° and 82° East longitude. Also, the island has a strategic maritime position along ancient spice routes, so historically it became an essential link between East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
