When was the Kubalwela Mahamevnawa Asapuwa originally established?
The Kubalwela branch of the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery network was set up in the early 2000s as part of a nationwide resurgence. Mostly focused on forest tradition meditation practices, it felt like one steady wave.
It was founded under the broader direction of Venerable Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero, but the exact place came from geography, isolation, and a high-altitude climate, which mattered a lot. In the last two decades, it has grown quickly, from a small cluster of meditation huts into a key regional hub for Dhamma learning and also spiritual retreats.
