What to wear to climb Sigiriya?

While climbing Sigiriya, try wearing lightweight, breathable clothes like a cotton t-shirt and shorts to keep cool in that tropical heat. Then match that with firm, comfy walking shoes or trainers, plus a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses so the sun doesn’t get you.

Getting to the top means tackling about 1,200 steep, narrow steps, and the area around it stays humid with strong sunlight pretty much all year. So, avoid thicker fabrics like denim, because they kind of trap heat and limit your range. Sigiriya isn’t really an active religious temple that forces a strict dress code that covers shoulders and knees, but modest athletic or hiking wear is still widely accepted and honestly recommended. Apply plenty of sunscreen before you start, and bring a light daypack to carry a water bottle, since staying hydrated matters a lot during that roughly hour-long climb.
