What species of birds and wild animals can you spot in Peradeniya Gardens?

Peradeniya Gardens somewhat functions like an accidental wildlife sanctuary. It is heavily populated by enormous colonies of Indian flying foxes (fruit bats) that roost openly in the high tree canopies.

As you walk through, you will notice dozens of opportunistic Toque macaques roaming the lawns; visitors are strictly warned not to feed or provoke these monkeys. They can become aggressive, so please keep your distance. Birdwatchers often spot endemic Sri Lankan hanging parrots, vivid kingfishers diving near the riverbanks, and yellow-fronted barbets tucked inside the thick foliage.
