What is the meaning of Trincomalee?
The name "Trincomalee" is an anglicised adaptation of the old Tamil term "Tirukonamalai," and it basically points to "Lord of the Sacred Hill".
That naming story is connected to the sacred Swami Rock and to the ancient Koneswaram Temple that sits on top of those cliff faces. In the past, the whole area was a major spiritual hub for Shaivite Hindus across the surrounding region. The hill’s striking seaside layout shaped its spiritual meaning as well, and it also influenced the modern name.
