What is Koneswaram Temple?

Koneswaram Temple is a very revered Hindu place of worship in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It sits on top of the dramatic Swami Rock cliff, and it is counted as one of the five ancient "Pancha Ishwarams" in the area.

The location carries immense historical and religious weight, and pilgrims have been coming there for centuries. At one point, the Portuguese destroyed it in the 17th century, and later it was rebuilt. Today, the temple complex shows detailed Dravidian-style architecture, bright shrines, and a massive golden statue of Lord Shiva looking out over the Indian Ocean.
