Is Sri Lanka part of India?
No, Sri Lanka is a fully independent, sovereign island nation, and it is not part of India. It has its own separate administration, passport, currency, the Sri Lankan Rupee, and internationally recognised boundaries.
Even though it is divided from the Indian mainland by the narrow Palk Strait, a span of roughly 30 kilometres at the tightest point, Sri Lanka has kept a distinct political self for many, many years. The country finally stepped away from British colonial rule in 1948, which was separate from India’s independence in 1947. The two places also share wide cultural connections, but they keep entirely independent political systems, without coordination.
