Is Sri Lanka in South Asia or Southeast Asia?

Sri Lanka is geographically and politically placed in South Asia, even though people sometimes read it differently. It’s an island state in the Indian Ocean, lying right off the southeastern shoreline of the Indian subcontinent.

Sri Lanka also keeps deep cultural, historical, and linguistic connections with many South Asian neighbours, especially India, and it is a founding participant of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Even with its wet tropical climate, shining beaches, and Buddhist legacy, which may make visitors mix up its “look” with Southeast Asian places like Thailand or Bali, the country remains clearly anchored in South Asia. Its setting on the Indian tectonic plate, together with its own distinct geopolitical path, is what really separates it from the Southeast Asian nations.
