How long does it take to climb Sigiriya?

Climbing up the Sigiriya Rock Fortress usually takes somewhere around 45 minutes to about 1.5 hours, but it can vary because of your physical fitness and how crowded the paths get. The full round trip, with the summit ruins exploration included, often ends up needing 2.5 to 3 hours overall, sometimes a little more if people linger.

On the way up, you will be dealing with roughly 1,200 uneven stone and metal steps, which feels longer than you’d expect. To handle the harsh midday heat and also to slip around the large lines that build up on the narrow stairways, it is best to start the climb right when the gates open, at 7:00 AM. Also, if you have acrophobia, you should keep in mind that the last metallic staircase, attached to the rock wall, is pretty exposed and windy too, so take your time.
