How deep is the Nil Diya Pokuna cave?
The precise depth of the Nil Diya Pokuna cave network still isn’t mapped, but the primary subterranean pond appears to lie about 80 metres, 260 feet below ground level. The water in that pond is reported as extraordinarily deep, with local stories stating it is bottomless, and people repeat this as if it’s certain.
Getting to the water involves a steep, almost vertical descent, down through a maze of thin cracks and fissures. Since full geological surveys have not been carried out by the state, the real reach of the underwater caverns is not known, which adds to the quiet mystique of the place. At the same time, that same gap in knowledge raises the obvious risk.
