Can I buy genuine plant seeds and local spices near the Peradeniya garden gates?

While plenty of street sellers just outside the Peradeniya gates offer assorted seeds, orchids, and local spices, visitors should approach these purchases with caution.

The botanical garden proper does have an official plant nursery that sells verified saplings, but agricultural export rules prevent tourists from removing living plants or uncertified raw seeds from Sri Lanka. Also, independent hawkers are known to really pump up the prices for outsiders, so it is better to buy export-grade spices from approved government outlets or credible estate shops in Kandy.
