Are there sharks in Sri Lanka waters?

Yes, Sri Lankan waters host a number of shark species, including reef sharks and whale sharks. Still, when it comes to shark attacks on humans, those incidents stay incredibly rare. The marine ecosystem continues to thrive with these apex predators mainly out in deeper, offshore stretches.

From time to time, snorkellers and divers see harmless blacktip reef sharks around well-known coastal spots, like Pigeon Island, and also elsewhere. On longer ocean trips, especially off Trincomalee or Mirissa, people may be lucky enough to notice massive whale sharks, which are docile. Local authorities keep an eye on public beaches so tourist safety stays high, and in general, there isn't a big concern for recreational swimmers.
