Are agency guides licensed by the Tourist Board?

Yes, all guides used by reputable agencies must carry valid licences issued by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). If someone is running as a commercial tourist guide without that government certification, then it’s strictly illegal in Sri Lanka.

Those licences show the person has passed demanding state checks on topics like history, wildlife, and emergency protocols. When you first meet them, you can ask your driver or the guide to show their official SLTDA badge, just to be sure.
